The Cincinnati
Addiction Research Center (CinARC) was created in 1995 and
commenced work in October of that year as the Cincinnati
NIDA VA/UC Medication Development Research Unit (MDRU).
The staff of CinARC includes experienced investigators from
the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Veterans
Administration Medical Center, as well as seasoned therapists,
research assistants, nurses, and quality assurance, regulatory,
administrative, and computer-support personnel.
Since 1995, CinARC, led by Dr. Eugene Somoza, has gained
a reputation for excellence in the conduct of clinical trials,
as evidenced by the award of a NIDA Clinical Trials Operations
(CTO) contract in 1999 and a NIDA Medication Development
for Stimulants (MDS-II) contract in 2007. Through the MDRU,
CTO, and MDS-II mechanisms, the CinARC team has completed
14 clinical trials at the Cincinnati and Dayton, OH, VA
hospitals, the majority of which have been pharmacological
trials for cocaine dependence. CinARC has also completed
numerous pharmaceutical company-sponsored substance-abuse
clinical trials.
At the national level, CinARC established the Ohio Valley
Node (OVN) of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network (CTN) in 2000
and acts as its “Regional Research and Training Center.”
Twenty three community treatment programs throughout the
Midwest and in Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia are
also part of the OVN. To date the OVN has participated
in twenty CTN clinical trials and other studies.
